Mystery creature of WH Smith
I watched as the pink globe dotted about the bookshelves. Its ratty, blood shot eyes scanning the the shelves in search for something. I silently positioned myself at the edge of the shelves to hope upon a chance encounter with this creature. Two, then three books came out and lay upon its sweaty palm. From the angle I lay in wait I was unable to see what the nature of its quarry was. What was the creature up to in WH Smith of a Monday lunchtime? What did it seek amidst the computer and home design books?
After a few minutes the creatures beady, vein straddled eyes fell up its prey. It’s cold, blunt, lifeless iris shrunk to a tiny black dot. A sense of chill air filled the book area. The creature had found its prey.
Swiftly the item was dispatched. Looking nervously around as if to check it had not been seen it made its way to the checkout. Almost spotted I darted under the cookery books. Had I been spotted? I cowered and waited for the cold tap on the shoulder from the salivating beast. I looked down, too nervous to think. I gulped, swallowed hard my throat dry. Had I been spotted?
A cold guff of air surrounded me and left to my right. the creature rustled past. In his hand a brown bag. In that bag his prey. He didn’t see me. I swallowed hard. He stopped, glanced around and moved off in haste.
I quickly jumped up to my feet and went to the shelf the creature was so intent on searching. What had it been looking for? I glanced this way then that before noticing the tell tale signs of drool and dribble. The dome headed creature had been here. What on Gods great earth could this creature have wanted under the computer section?
I asked the cashier. In a half witted reply from the corner of her sneering mouth she told me the gent who had last been had purchased a copy of ‘PhotoShop for Dummies’.
WHAT ON EARTH? What could this vial creature from the Fleet backwater want with a book on PhotoShop? I ran like the wind down St Thomas Street to catch the creature. Up toward the bridge I stopped. In front of me stood Fester! I was stunned, shocked. Surely this creature could not, or could it have been Fester - But why PhotoShop?
Why would he be so eager to purchase a copy of PhotoShop for Dummies having returned from his holiday kite surfing?
In my next article we’ll examine the possibilities...
