Sorry but there are no diary events
Many of you are already well aware that as of a week or so past the Weymouth & Portland Kite Surfing Club became officially affiliated to the British Kite Surfing Association (BKSA). The move was voted for almost 10 to 1 in favour and so the club is now affiliated to the BKSA.
As the 2012 Olympics approach there's a real need to represent kite surfing in Portland Harbour as a safe and well backed sport. A few hardy members couldn't possibly stand up to the might of Portland Port or the Olympic committee if ever it was decided to stop our sport in the harbour so therefore we have joined with the sports biggest regulatory body the BKSA to ensure we can act from the very top in times of trouble.
Many spots up and down the UK have seen the intervention of local authority in banner or restricting the sport. With the growth of people taking up the sport and many using our waters it makes total sense to get some 'protection' form a higher authority to protect us if ever it was needed.
So that's what we did! It's not only that but there are many other benefits to affiliation that in the fullness of time the WPKSC will be drawing upon. the committee is now looking at a year of events, competitions and races plus lots of give away prizes that Mad Dog has somehow stolen from kite surfing shops and such.
WPKSC has rather stagnated in the past few years. A noble effort has been made to generate interest but that was usually met by half hearted attendance. This is nothing like the original club so new year, new committee who will try a different tack to see if we can't turn around the club. Of course, if we cannot generate any enthusiasm we'll hand the baton to the next committee and so on.
We're the oldest club in the country and the social scene here years back was second to none. What happened?
Keep your eyes on the web site for regular updates as we enter the new season...
